It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

So why do I love a cartoon that came out 5 years before I was born? And why do I love it still at 54 years old?

I don’t remember the first time I watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. It must have been when I was quite young back in the great 1970’s. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been a fan of Halloween, Trick-or-Treating, the fall/autumn season and the great shows and movies that go along with it all. I always knew that once It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown came on television in October, that Halloween wasn’t far behind. And that was exciting.

Now obviously if you’ve seen the show, it’s no masterpiece, it’s okay, we can be real here. However, at the time, for kids, it was one of the greatest shows television ever produced.
I was talking to a friend a few months ago about shows or movies like this. We asked ourselves…”Do we love these shows because they are great? Or more because it’s the nostalgia factor of loving it as a kid?” …and I think we chose the latter. People tend to love things as adults, because they loved it as a kid.

Now obviously I’ve watched It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown about 45 times (I probably didn’t watch it when I was 1 or 2 years old…but maybe. And I did miss a year or two as an adult), and although I’ve seen it time and time again…I watch it as an adult because for 30 minutes, it brings me back to when I was a kid. It lets me forget the world of “Adulting” for a moment. And as adults…we need that. Right?

Another Note…
I always felt sorry for Charlie Brown…I mean, why did every household only give him rocks? What kind of mean adult do you have to be to give a kid rocks on Halloween? What did Charlie Brown do that was so bad that he deserved to get frigg’n rocks instead of delicious candy? Not to go too dark here, but if I was Charlie Brown…I would have saved those rocks for years, then as a teenager, got my revenge by throwing those rocks through the windows of those houses. Seems kind of harsh, but seriously….
 
For the record…
​I am an Android user, an Acer and Microsoft user, and I don’t own a single Apple or Macintosh product. Just personal preference, but I’ve never cared for those products. Why do I say that…well…I hate HATE the fact that Apple now owns the rights to the Peanuts shows. I hate the fact that I can’t watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown every October on CBS…like I have my entire life. I get that change happens. Sometimes I embrace change, but sometimes I hate it and get defensive about it. So yeah, I am not a fan of Apple and certainly not a fan that I must pay a subscription to watch my beloved Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Maybe I sound like a spoiled kid, but it’s how I feel. Apple can suck it!! HA!!

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown give’s me the warm and fuzzy feeling. I’ve always wanted to join the Peanuts gang at the Halloween party, the Trick-or-Treating (without the rocks) and part of me wanted to hang out with Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin to rise from his pumpkin patch and fly through the air with his bag of toys to all the children. And to quote the wise Linus "Dear Great Pumpkin, I am looking forward to your arrival on Halloween night. I hope you will bring me lots of presents." (I mean, Santa shouldn’t have all the glory).
